In number theory Fermat’s Last Theorem states that no three positive integers a, b , and c satisfy For the book by Simon Singh, see Fermat’s Last Theorem (book). This theorem was first conjectured by Pierre de Fermat in in the margin of a copy of “Memoria bibliographica sull’ultimo teorema di Fermat”. : ULTIMO TEOREMA DE FERMAT, EL () by SIMON SINGH and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books . First, it was necessary to prove the modularity theorem — or at least to prove it for the types of elliptical curves that included Frey’s equation known as semistable elliptic curves. Open Preview See a Problem? I’ve been thinking also about what attracts me to books on mathematical topics — the works by Martin Gardner, William Poundstone, and the various other authors in the company of whose thoughts Georema had pleasure to spend a week or more.
If everyone gets to take turns in order of their skill dimon that worst shoots first, what should the worst do? There’s a good whistle-stop tour of the history of mathematics, and it does its best trying to explain what’s going on.
The characters, he introduced were interesting and intriguing and this book can be a gateway to learning more about such people and how their works, largely una I was curious about this mathematical thriller, how it unfolded and what all did it leave behind in its wake. Why has this theorem been so difficult to prove? AroundJapanese mathematicians Goro Shimura and Yutaka Taniyama observed a possible link between two apparently completely distinct branches of mathematics, elliptic curves and modular forms.

Riesce pure a mettere errori di matematica nelle definizioni che, mi dispiace, in un libro di matematica noooooo, proprio non accetto!. Overall I would not recommend this book because it is just too dull. Views Read Edit View history. And that’s basically the book.

Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung. If you understand calculus and basic siingh theory and have a passion for solving problems than this definitely the book for you, otherwise I would stay away from this book. I could actually follow this. Simon Singh did not do it the full justice though the effort to bring such an extremely esoteric mathematics behind the proof and its ramifications, to the fore requires an ability even far dw superior than Wiles’ perseverance.
However despite these efforts and their results, no proof existed of Fermat’s Last Theorem. An approach through history.
This book is not yet featured on Listopia. While a good portion of the story covers a wide span in history, much of the story is a limited biography of Andrew Wiles, the mathematician responsible for the poof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. But instead of being fixed, the problem, which had originally seemed minor, now seemed very significant, far more serious, and less easy to resolve.
But when I reached the end, I still didn’t feel I understood at all teorfma the proof worked. Singh’s historical exposition of Fermat’s Last Theorem and problems related and surrounded by it, is very colourful and engaging.

He uses narrative, biography, and human interest to make it read well and easy. Read more at A Spirited Mind In addition many of the concepts the book discusses get extremely confusing and I didn’t understand a good bit of the story due to Upon reading this book, I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about the history of mathematics and the adventures Andrew Wiles went through to solve a mathematical problem which was unsolved for years.
I got a lot more though out of Prime ObsessionDerbyshire’s book on the Riemann Hypothesis, where the author opens up the box and shows you some of the actual math Still, all of this leads teorems what I think is an even more tantalizing problem.
