There was so much space to work in, that I just kept adding elements until I had a complete low level campaign built up out of what originally was a fairly short adventure. Book 1 contains the background material and ans allies-gathering, while book 2 has the big battle and the keep.
In any case you’ll end up with a style break when moving from one half of the castle to the other. The Iron Circle are the super-evil-bad guys who have cast down the rightful Duke.

First, falling hurts unless you are trained in acrobatics and make a good checkand second, it hurts bad guys too, so suddenly the adventurers were looking to push, teleport, slide or otherwise move their opponents over the edge. Harkenwold is a Duchy that has been invaded by an outside army filled with mercenaries including a few summoned fiends. Flexibility is the key strength of this module.

My players were a level above the recommended range for the adventure, so I mostly left the numbers alone higher-level PCs, but fewer of them than recommendedand it worked out okay.
It has about 20 pages of adventure outline, places of interest, and NPCs the mortarand about 40 pages of combat encounters the bricks. There is plenty of information in Reavers of Harkenwold for a party that loves role-playing to really get into the world and its people and their problems.
But it does require some preparation, an added dose of roleplaying, and creating of the missing maps. Free a region of innocents ddungeons an evil outside army that has taken over.
Leave a Reply Cancel reply. A rebel resistance has sprung up and it’s up to the PCs to help liberate the Duchy. This product very much appears to be designed to be played “right out of the box”.
It then moves into the various encounters that the PCs may meet. The adventure was written for levels 2 to 4… but in my own game, I stretched this content out for months on end. The Keep itself, for instance, could have just a few goblins on the first level, maybe the zombies on the way down the stairs, the hobgoblins below and the trap room before you get into the Kalarel area throwing out the rats, kruthiks, slime, gelatinous cube, pf.
The catch is that it isn’t quite that easy to do that. Great guy, great store!

I believe the Essentials products are arranged so that you can start with the adventure from the Red Box Starter Set, which takes the party from level 1 to level 2, and then move them into Reavers of Harkenwold. Same as the old boss. You still need to add your own ingredients the roleplayingand have some knowledge and skill to put it all together into a sturdy whole.
As I said before, with some good DMing, Reavers of Harkenwold could be one of the best adventures for 4th edition. If you plan to play this adventure as a PC and you want to be surprised, I suggest you stop reading now.

Harkenwokd removed the traps and one of the monsters from that battle and it was STILL too hard the players retreated and came back the next day with an elf ally.
I ran the game using MapTool online for a party of three PCs. Liberating the underground lair for the elves D4 again: If you try them with just 3 players, or even 4 very new players, you might end up with a total party kill TPK. How long that will take will depend on how much roleplaying the DM and the players like, but if you count about 2 combats per session you’d end up with about 10 sessions, which is a lot of adventure. The Reavers of Harkenwold adventure is, in a word, excellent. They conquered and pillaged, but they also brought technology and civilization along with their conquest.
