The descriptions and overall feel of the book were very cold and emotionless, resulting in myself really not caring for the characters or the outcome of the book.

The last generation of Chinese women to have their feet bound, she displays dignity, gentleness, and love through all the adversities of the time. To have any clue of what was happening, you needed to keep a running family tree of an extremely complex family going, just to keep track of names. It recites in detail of her grandmother and mother’s lives, but when it come to herself, there was hardly any deep salvames or for us to see how the person developed.
I just couldn’t read this book.
It was too consuming and junf trying to remember the many Chinese names and places.
