Christie portrays their marriage wonderfully; it is not overdone, just a portrait of a fond couple who are very “settled in” together and have mutual affection and respect. The novel is the last one featuring the married couple team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. During the Second World War, Christie worked in the pharmacy at University College Hospital of University College, London, where she acquired a knowledge of poisons that she put to good use in her post-war crime novels.

There are a couple of other deaths that the doctor thinks might be suspicious. This one is great. The novel was adapted into a television movie in as part of the Marple series starring Geraldine McEwan even though Christie did not write Marple into the original story.

Tuppence and her muddled brain and intuitive leaps really keeps things confusing though doesn’t push the plot f This book took me months to read. The trail eventually leads to a village, where child murders had occurred 20 years ago, in rural England.

I think the story flowed just as well if it wasn’t there. The light romance between the two is very sweet, particularly considering their old-couple status.

Abney Hall became Agatha’s greatest inspiration for country-house life, with all the servants and grandeur which have been woven into her plots. In Book 3 Tommy and his servant Albert are worried about Tuppence. I’m going to go ahead and give this five stars, because it is fairly rare for Dame Agatha to go all-out creepy with her books and I’m amazed at how well she does it here!

My sons are 11 and 13 and they became so wrapped up in the mystery that when the first half was over, they got upset thinking they might have to wait a week to see the ending. The story is different from Agatha Christie’s other stories.

Tommy and Tuppence make a wonderful pair, though this story was mostly Tuppence’s show. Mrs Lancaster unexpectedly says ‘Was it your poor child? Her departure intrigued Tuppence. Miss Packard Miriam Karlin Tuppence meets Miss Marple and together they follow a path of clues that lead them to the Norfolk village of Farrell St Edmund, where they find a community guarding an array of secrets.
