So it’s no wonder it took me more than a month to finish this book. As the book starts winding towards the end, his approaching death becomes the focus of his poems, rather than the vices that drove him there. Really dig the mundane topics he often wrote about, like a poetic Harvey Pekar.
I have things in my past that can be viewed as depressing but never so much as to call me unfortunate. There’s a little of everything in here, but perhaps the most moving poems were the ones at the very end of this book – in them he talks about life, specifically the end of one’s life, the end of his life to be exact. Throughout Plezsures Pleasures of the Damned I followed Bukowski’s everday life and observations of the world that he lives in. Bukowski was like the king of the down and outs, I admire this man so much.

I love conversational works, but this is conversational to a fault – like do we need the words “cunt” and “ass” on every other page to demonstrate that we write for the average joe?
In addition there is a ratio of about 1 decent poem to 15 filler poems. He was a man I would have loved to have met. And for the uninitiated, Buk’s work is certainly worth reading.
Bukowski’s poetry captures all aspects of the seedy underbelly of America. Poems Charles Bukowski John Martin ed. On to the subject matter itself, Bukowski comes across as a leering, bitter old man. Bukowski can be strangely comedic on touchy subjects, but he is also dangerously solemn when the idea of existence is discussed, such as in his poem “Mind and heart”. For the most part, I was disappointed.
I’m not a part o that world.
I’m not even sure where to begin here. The transition of his poems of mocking life to being sad about not living life more, enlightened some of my approaches to living. In this volume, the language and spacing of his poems has an approachability that the common man can relate to, I relate to. Charles Bukowski is one oleasures America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. His approach to poetry, which he explains perfectly in “Poetry”, makes buokwski sense to me than any tge authors explination of it. I will definitely be reading more of Bukowski’s works.
Well Mister B I want to thank you and tell you that you were deserving of the life you got to lead in the end even if it was a struggle to get there, because your poems wouldn’t be the same without those downs.
